The Palm Pre had been advertised as being compatible with iTunes. However now it does not seem likely that this feature will be available. Through updates of the iTune system Apple disabled the capability of the Pre to sync with iTunes. Palm complained to the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) claiming that Apple was unfairly restricting trade by allowing neither Palm nor other devices to synchronize to iTunes. In response to Palm’s complaint, the USB-IF instead declared that Palm had violated the group’s membership agreement by misrepresenting the Pre as an iPod so as to connect to iTunes.
Blackberry has software that can transfer music from iTunes to the Blackberry Media player. However this software is limited to DRM-free music, which costs extra at the iTunes store. Palm might be able to develop similar software in the future. If not, Palm users will have to find alternatives to iTunes.
